Archaeological Park in Budinjak, September 2011

Workshops "Millenniums of culinary art" have been holding in September since 2005 during two weekends in archaeological park in Budinjak. It is advisable to apply to Public institution Žumberak – Samoborsko gorje Nature Park. Program is simple and lasts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Usual archaeological scent of soil or dark museum halls in Budinjak is during few days in September replaced by those of mint, Roman salty dish of liquamen and exotic spices which were brought by Middle Ages merchants from their journeys to Near East countries. The scents of past emerge from culinary workshops on which visitors compete in preparing dishes following historical recipes.

The program starts with sightseeing archaeological park along educational Trail of princes (Staza kneževa). After pleasant walk, participants start preparing food on the area in front of Eco-center Budinjak. Visitors divided in four groups prepare meals at the same time in open space equipped with fire. They use pre-historic, Roman, Middle Aged and traditional Žumberak recipes. After they finish meals, they enjoy the tastes of gone pre-historical and historical periods as well as in traditional dishes that are still prepared in Žumberak families.

The ingredients are collected on nearby grassland as wild-growing plants were important ingredients in dishes of pre-historic population of the area. Some of the meals are prepared using special technology of baking in clay pots formerly made by visitors.
If you have not experienced the smell of unusually spiced Roman vine and you have not tasted exceptional taste of chicken in the sauce of verjuice (liquid made by crushing unripe grapes), you know what is to do – you definitely shouldn't miss next opportunity to participate in workshops "Millenniums of culinary art".
